2009 Eastern Zone Meeting - Eglin AFB Golf Course

May 6, 2009 - Hosted by Paul Wargo, CGCS, the Eastern Zone Meeting, held at The Eglin Golf Club in Niceville, Florida, was a grand success. The informative and interesting educational seminar, entitled "Weed Management in Turfgrass," was expertly conducted by Dr. Barry Brecke. Because managing weeds is one of the biggest challenges that superintendents face today, Dr. Brecke had everyone's attention as he discussed a multitude of strategies for controlling the most common weeds that plague golf course turf in our area. Barry Brecke, PhD, a decorated weed scientist at the University of Florida, did a fine job of communicating his strategies, and it was easy to see why he is highly sought after for speaking engagements on this critically important subject matter.

After the meeting, the Gulf Coast GCSA members enjoyed a great lunch in the Eglin grill, followed by an 18-hole golf tournament on the beautiful and newly renovated Eagle course. Everyone had a great time - especially the winning team which included host Superintendent Paul Wargo, Dennis Stein, Ron Prescott and Ben Knowlton. They shot an impressive 11-under score of 61 in pretty tough conditions. Angie Waters (#5) and our humble webmaster Rod Jordan (holes 13 and 16) took home closest-to-the-pin honors. The final prize, for Long Drive, was captured by Ron Prescott who cranked out a booming 350+ yard drive on number 18. Be sure to check out the pics from the event, and hope to see you all next time!
